REPLACE THE FILTERS

  • Just like the filters in your car, your HVAC filters need to be replaced. It can be an easy component to forget about, but one that can have a huge impact on the air quality of your home. Each HVAC unit is different, so replace your filters on the schedule that your manufacturer recommends (generally every 30 days), but you will definitely need to replace the filters soon if you notice your house getting extra dusty after you run your heat or air conditioner.

CLEAN THE AC DRAIN LINE

  • Step 1: Turn off your air conditioner.

  • Step 2: Find the condensate drain line.

  • Step 3: Locate the access point on the drain. Remove the 90-degree cap, which fits on a T-shaped connector on the PVC condensation drain pipe. Doing this will open the access hole of the pipe.

  • Step 4: Flush with distilled vinegar.

  • Step 5: Let it sit for about 30 minutes.

  • Step 6: Repeat each month.

PERFORM VISUAL INSPECTIONS OF THE HVAC SYSTEM

Inspect the system monthly when changing the filter to uncover potential problems. Check out the thermostat, inside the unit, outside the unit, and registers and returns. On your visual checklist, you should include things like:

  • Battery status on the thermostat

  • Inspect the condensate system to ensure that it is draining properly

  • Ensure the filter access and cabinet door are securely closed

  • Make sure the flue system is securely attached and fully intact

  • Check all registers for signs of mold

KEEP EVAPORATOR AND CONDENSER COILS CLEAN

If your indoor and outdoor HVAC unit has coil systems, it is important that these coils remain free of debris for consistent airflow to keep the units running, as the unit may no longer turn on if the coils are blocked. It is important to follow the coil cleaning instructions so they do not become damaged.
